ads arrive in chatgpt

chatgpt now shows ads in spain: before you pay, check whether it already recommends you for free

Since 24 August 2026, ChatGPT has been showing ads in Spain and in thirty other European markets. They are seen by people on the free version or the Go plan, they are labelled and kept separate from the answer, and OpenAI says they do not change what the assistant replies. So before paying to appear there, it is worth checking something else first: what ChatGPT already says about your business when someone asks, without you spending a euro.

what exactly has changed?

OpenAI started testing advertising in the United States in February and brought it to the United Kingdom in June. On 24 August it opened it up in 31 European markets, Spain among them, and since the end of August businesses have been able to sign up as advertisers without going through an agency, although it is still in a testing phase. It is bought the same way as on other advertising platforms: paying per thousand times the ad is shown or per click, and measuring impressions, clicks, cost per click and conversions.

This is no small experiment. OpenAI already talks about advertising revenue running at a rate of 1 billion dollars a year, and the big platforms are taking up position: Amazon Ads has signed a deal so that its advertisers can buy space on ChatGPT from their own dashboard, for now only in the United States. What is a trial today has every chance of becoming one more line in any advertising plan.

who sees the ads and who doesn't?

The ads only appear to people using ChatGPT for free or on the Go plan, the cheapest one. Anyone paying for Plus, Pro or Enterprise does not see them. That matters more than it seems: the part of your audience that pays for ChatGPT will never come across your ad, but it will read the answer the assistant gives when they ask about what you sell.

OpenAI stands by two commitments: that ads are always labelled and kept separate from the answer, and that advertising does not influence what ChatGPT replies. Take that for what it is, the company's stated policy. But the practical consequence is clear: paying puts you next to the answer, not inside it. If the assistant recommends someone else, your ad will be competing against that recommendation.

ad or answer? where the difference lies

In a traditional search engine you compare ten links. In an assistant the answer arrives already summarised: two or three names with an explanation of why. Someone who types “which company would you recommend for this near Fuengirola” does not get a list to work through, they get a recommendation. Being among those two or three names cannot be bought: it depends on what the assistant finds about you and how well it understands it.

Marketing Directo, the Spanish trade publication, listed it as one of its five key points for brands: do not confuse advertising with organic visibility in artificial intelligence. They are two separate lanes and they are paid for in different ways. The ad is paid for while it is running. Appearing in the answer is something you work on and maintain, and it does not switch off the day you stop spending.

what does chatgpt say about your business today?

Hardly anyone has checked, and it is not only small businesses. In May, the agency Corporate Ink published a survey of 150 marketing leaders at technology companies in the United States. 72% had seen artificial intelligence describe their company in a way that was inaccurate, outdated or incomplete. Of those, 29% were doing nothing to correct it. And fewer than half, 43%, knew which of their customers' questions they wanted to appear in.

Checking it for your own business takes five minutes. Open ChatGPT without logging in, so the answer is not tailored to what it already knows about you, and ask it three questions the way a customer would: one using your business name, another about what you sell in your area without naming yourself, and a third comparing you with the alternative people usually choose. In each answer, note three things: whether you appear, whether the details are correct, such as opening hours, address, prices or what you do, and which pages it takes the information from when it shows its sources.

what makes it recommend you without paying?

There is no trick, but there is a short list of things that depend on you. The first is technical and it is the one most often overlooked. OpenAI uses a crawler called OAI-SearchBot to find the websites it shows in ChatGPT's search answers, and its documentation is explicit: websites that block it do not appear in those answers. You check this in your website's robots.txt file, and it is worth not confusing it with GPTBot, which collects content to train its models. They are independent: you can let the first one in and shut the door on the second.

If your website runs through Cloudflare, also review its artificial intelligence traffic settings. Since 15 September 2026, on newly added domains, it blocks training and agent crawlers by default on pages that display advertising, although it lets search crawlers through. It is a reasonable setting, but it is better to know what you have switched on than to find out the day you stop appearing.

what else is in your hands?

The second is that your details say the same thing everywhere. If your website gives one set of opening hours, your Google listing another and an old directory a third, the assistant picks one or mixes them up. Address, phone number, opening hours, services and guide prices must match, and on your website they must be written as text, not inside an image. The third is structured data: a hidden card in the page's code that describes your business in a format designed to be read by machines.

The fourth does not depend only on you: what others say about your business. Reviews, mentions in local media and directories in your sector give the assistant something more than your own version. A recommendation stands up better on several sources that agree than on your website alone.

when does paying make sense?

When all of the above is in order. An ad takes someone to your website or your listing, and if the details there do not match what they have just read, you pay for the click and lose the visit. With the groundwork in place, advertising on ChatGPT helps you reach people who are still deciding what to buy, which is precisely the moment people ask an assistant.

If you decide to try it, treat it for what it is, a new channel that is still being tested. Start with a small budget you can afford to lose, write ads that answer a specific problem rather than a slogan, and measure what really matters: the calls, appointments or orders that come in, not the impressions. And every few weeks, ask the assistant about your business again with no ad involved, because that answer is also read by people who will never see your advertising.
